Titus - Chapter One

THINKING BIBLICALLY - Part 2           Page 4
V. 6 (cont'd.)

** What is the first area of testing or qualification in the life of the elder?

His family. How singularly devoted he is to his wife and to what degree his children have followed his ability to lead.

V. 7-8
** In what role does the Overseer serve God? (episkopos - superintendent)

As a steward. cf. 1Corinthians 4:2 "...it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy..."

** What follows next is a list of five negative and six positive descriptions of the character of the man. What are they and how do they relate:

not self-willed - but - hospitable
not quick-tempered - but - loving what is good
not addicted to wine - but - sensible
not pugnacious (fighter) - but - just
not fond of sordid gain - but - devout

...He is self-controlled

V. 9 ** What is the weapon of choice for this righteous man?

"...holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching..."

** What two things does he do with the word of God?

1) "exhort in sound doctrine"
2) "refute those who contradict"

** Is this Prescribed Pattern just for Elders?

Absolutely not!

Philippians 2:14-15 "...prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach..."

1Peter 5:1-3 "...[elders] proving to be examples to the flock."
We should imitate the elder of God!
