Galatians, Chapter Two, Lesson One

AVOIDING COMPROMISE           Page 5
V. 6 (Cont'd.)

** How much did these pillars have to add to the gospel which Paul had been preaching to the Gentiles?

Nothing! After hearing Paul's "gospel to the Gentiles", they added nothing to it. Paul had received it from Christ (1:12) and it agreed perfectly with these pillars of the Jerusalem church.
Why? Because their's had come from the same God!

V. 7 ** Instead of changing Paul's gospel, what did these spiritual leaders do?

They saw that Paul "...had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised...". cf. Titus 1:3

** What authenticating parallel do they draw?

"...just as Peter had been to the circumcised".

V. 8 ** What common source provided the power behind both Paul's and Peter's ministry?

God (He) was the One who effectually worked in both of their ministries.

** Where do everyday Christians like you and I get our power to witness to others on behalf of Christ?

From the exact same source! cf. Philippians 2:12-13

V. 9 ** Besides seeing that Paul was entrusted with the gospel to the Gentiles, what else did these men
recognize?

"...the grace that had been given to..." Paul.

** How did they respond to Paul, having recognized God's work in his life?

They gave him the right hand of fellowship.

** What does that symbolize?

1) It was a pledge of friendship and agreement.
2) It was a pledge of partnership in preaching the same gospel.
3) It was a pledge of mutual alliance for Paul, Barnabas, James, Peter and John.
