Ephesians, Chapter Six, Lesson Two

THE SPIRIT FILLED LIFE - Part 7            Page 2

The Spirit Filled Life

INVESTIGATE

V. 5 ** What are the next two categories of Spirit filled Christians that Paul now addresses?

Slaves (V. 5) and masters (V. 9 ).

** Is Paul hereby condoning the practice of slavery?

No - While kidnapping someone for the purpose of using them in forced labor is Biblically wrong, it was common for someone to voluntarily indenture themselves to work off a debt. But they were freed during the year of Jubilee (every 50 years, this was following a lapse of seven Sabbaths of years or seven times seven years). cf. Exodus 21:16 and Leviticus 25:39-40

** So if Paul is not addressing what is right or wrong about slavery, what is he talking about?

How we behave, no matter who we are! (Holy Spirit controlled labor relations)

Remember Ephesians 5:21! All Christians, even if they relate to one another as slaves and masters are to "be subject" (hupotasso) to one another.
cf. Paul's instruction in 1Corinthians 7:20-24.

** What obvious parallel can we draw to today's society from this passage.

Employees and employers - and their relations.

** What command does Paul give to the Holy Spirit filled servant or employee?

"be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh", this is not a complicated, or elusive concept! It is merely a simple command!

** What do you suppose He means by the phrase "according to the flesh"?

Paul is referring to our earthly masters, those who have a physical authority over our labors - not a spiritual authority.
