Ephesians, Chapter Five, Lesson One

THE SPIRIT FILLED LIFE - Part 1            Page 5
V. 4 (Cont'd.)

** While these three should also be eliminated from the life of every child of God, is it enough to simply avoid this manner of life or are we to do something in it place?

We should replace all of the world's erroneous view of love with a heart of thanksgiving. If we are truly walking in love, our hearts will burst forth with thanks to God for the new life we enjoy.
cf. Ephesians 5:20

V. 5 ** People have said that there are only two sure things, death and taxes! Our passage today does show us two more. What is the first one in verse five?

The type of person described in verses 3 and 4 will not inherit the kingdom.

** Why does Paul throw in the fact that this type of individual is an "idolater".

Worship of anything other than God is idolatry. When a sinner puts his own fleshly desires before God, he makes himself the object of worship. cf. Colossians 3:5

** Does that mean that Christians go to Heaven because we are no longer sinners?

No - This is referring to the general practice of one's life which reveals who they are at heart.
cf. 1John 1:8-9 and 1John 3:9-10

So Paul has been showing us the contrast of the child of God, who displays God's love in his daily walk and the child of Satan who is consumed with the world's perversion of that love.

** Just one more note before we leave verse five, how many kingdoms are mentioned here?

Only one - the kingdom of Jesus Christ and God, one kingdom and One God!

V. 6 ** Alright, let's look at the second certainty Paul mentions, about what are we not to be deceived?

The wrath of God is coming! While this is not a popular message in today's user friendly world, it has never been popular. Mankind does not want to hear about their accountability before God.
