Ephesians, Chapter Five, Lesson One

THE SPIRIT FILLED LIFE - Part 1            Page 3
V. 1 (Cont'd.)

** What impact should being a child of God have on our life?

It should purify us from the inside out. cf. 1John 3:2-3 and Matthew 5:48

V. 2 ** As we strive to imitate God, as His beloved children, what is to be our motive? What should move us along with each step we take?

We should "walk in love". cf. 1Corinthians 16:14

** If you would think through that reality with me, with love as our driving motive for everything, how are you going to respond when others mistreat you?

You will return a blessing "instead". cf. 1Peter 3:8-9

** Who was the Master at this type of response?

Our beloved Lord Jesus Christ. We should imitate the pattern He set for us as well.
cf. 1John 2:5-6

** Here in verse two of our text for today, how has the love of Christ been demonstrated toward us?

He proved His love for us by giving "Himself up for us". This is the agape, self-sacrificing love that was willing to die for those who were hopelessly lost. cf. Romans 5:8

** What was God's view of this sacrificial kind of love?

It was a fragrant aroma - pleasing to God! cf. Philippians 4:18

V. 3 ** Whenever we see the glory of God on display, as in the case of Jesus' loving sacrifice on our behalf, we will be inevitably exposed to Satan's counterfeit. The world around us and the view of love that it holds is described in the next two verses. If we are living out "The Spirit Filled Life", how close should this perverted view get to us?

It should not "even be named among" us.
