Chapter One, Lesson Six
STRENGTH IN CHRIST Page
** What imagery does that bring to your mind?
Not just God's power (which is stronger than anything else in all of
creation), but His great power and not just that, but His surpassing
great power! The word used here by Paul for power is dunamis, from which
we get our word "dynamite". This is speaking of a power that
is beyond measuring.
** According to Paul, who has this unmeasurable, limitless power at their
disposal to strengthen them for service?
Every believer! It is "toward us who believe".
cf. Ephesians 3:20-21
** Since all Believers have this power within them, how should we respond
when confronted by a test or trial that seems too difficult?
That is when we should use our "understanding" and let the
rubber meet the road in our Christian walk. Even when we are feeling
run down, discouraged, worn out, defeated or lacking power, we should
be like Paul who said, "I can do all things through Him who strengthens
cf. Philippians 4:13
** What are we strengthened to do for Christ? Let me just give you three
1) We have the power to evangelize - Romans 1:16
2) We have the power to serve God - Colossians 1:29
3) We have the power to please God - Philippians 2:13
** Before leaving verse 19, Paul says that our knowing the hope of His
calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance and the surpassing
greatness of His power are all in accordance with three other things.
What are they?
Working - (energeia) Active operation of power, the Holy Spirit
energizing us to live for
the Lord. cf. Ephesians 3:7
Strength - (kratos) This refers to an ultimate power that holds
dominion over all other types of power. cf. Ephesians 6:10 and 1Timothy
Might - (ischus) This carries the idea of endowed power or ability.
It is an endless resource of might from the eternal God whose very nature
is might and power. cf. Isaiah 40:10-11
