Ephesians, Chapter One, Lesson Six

STRENGTH IN CHRIST            Page 3
V.18 (Cont'd.)

** Why does our loving God enlighten our hearts? What are the three reasons or purposes listed by Paul for this gracious understanding being granted to us?

1) That we may know "what is the hope of His calling"

2) That we may know "what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints"

3) That we may know "what is the surpassing greatness of His power" (V.19)

Paul uses the term "oida" for "know", meaning to have seen or perceived. We should have a clear perception of these three marvelous blessings from our Heavenly Father.

Let's look at these one at a time

** What is the "hope of His calling".

Romans 5:1-2 - peace with God
Romans 8:29 - conformed to the image of His son
Philippians 3:20-21 - transformation of our bodies
Titus 2:13 - Jesus Christ appearing in glory

** Next, how would you describe; not just His inheritance, nor the glory of His inheritance, but "the riches of the glory of His inheritance"?

You can't! We are not able to put into words all that God has done for us in our magnificent election, predestination, adoption, redemption, forgiveness, wisdom and insight, inheritance and sealing and pledge of the Holy Spirit about which Paul has just been instructing us.

The apostle is praying for us to understand in our hearts (minds) all that God has done for us, that we might live in grateful obedience to the One who has done everything for us!
cf. 1Corinthians 2:9

** Is this marvelous inheritance just for you?

No! It has been reserved for "the saints" or lit. God's "Holy ones". We are all joint heirs with Jesus Christ. cf. Romans 8:16-17

V.19 ** Finally, what two words does Paul choose to use in his attempt to describe what he wants us to know about God's power?

"surpassing greatness"
