Chapter One, Lesson Two
CORRUPT ENVIRONMENT Page
V.10 ** As Paul continues to build his list, we need to be reminded
that not only did the false teacher come from this Corrupt Environment,
but so did each one of us. How do you know this is true?
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you
formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to
the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working
in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived
in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and
of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
cf. 1Corinthians 6:9-11 (and such were some of you)
and Romans 3:23 (for all have sinned and fallen short of the
glory of God)
** So, who is next on our list? For whom was the Law made?
Immoral men - cf. Ephesians 5:5
Homosexuals - cf. Leviticus 18:22
Kidnappers - cf. Exodus 21:16, Deuteronomy 24:7
Liars - cf. Proverbs 12:22
Perjurers - cf. Proverbs 19:5,9
** As bad as that list is, could there be anything more?
Paul says, Yes - ...and whatever else is contrary
to sound teaching. Anything raised up against the knowledge of
God qualifies as a representative of the Corrupt Environment
for which God made His Law. cf. 2Corinthians 10:5
V.11 ** The Law of God was graciously given to men to show them
by how far they had missed the mark of Gods holiness. Do you recall
what Paul said to the Romans about that reality?
What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On
the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the
Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not
said, "You shall not covet." But sin, taking opportunity
through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for
apart from the Law sin is dead.
